Students affiliated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) marched to the Delhi Secretariat raising concerns over women’s safety and reported cases of sexual violence in Delhi. Students from schools, colleges and universities took part in the protest and called for stronger action from authorities.

The protesters also submitted a memorandum to Pradeep Tayal, Joint Secretary in the General Administration Department of the Delhi government, listing measures they said were needed to improve safety for women and girls.

SFI Delhi Protest: What Are Students Demanding?

The SFI has demanded zero tolerance towards delays in registering FIRs in cases of sexual violence. The organisation also called for time-bound safety audits in public spaces and institutions.

Other demands included functional CCTV cameras and streetlights, safer public transport, women’s safety assistance points and safe public toilets. The group also sought better institutional mechanisms to deal with complaints of sexual harassment.

The memorandum further called for gender sensitisation in schools and institutions, protection of gender and sexual minorities, greater accountability of authorities and functional Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs).

SFI Cites Reported Sexual Violence Cases In Delhi

During the march, SFI referred to several recent reported cases of sexual violence in Delhi, including incidents involving minors. The organisation said at least 13 cases of rape and sexual harassment were reported in Delhi during September.

Among the cases cited were the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old at Astha Kunj Park near Lady Shri Ram College, the reported sexual assault of an 11-year-old at a tailor shop in Sadar Bazar and the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old from Uttar Pradesh on a moving bus. These cases were cited by SFI while pressing for stronger preventive and institutional measures.

Students Seek Safer Campuses And Public Spaces

The protesters also raised concerns about restrictions on women students’ movement and called for safer campuses and public spaces instead of measures that limit their mobility.

The march comes amid a series of student-led demonstrations in Delhi over women’s safety. Over 200 students reportedly participated in the SFI Delhi march, while students of Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women also held a separate demonstration seeking enhanced security measures.
