    Q. Give three examples of the range of variations that you see in life forms around you.

    Sol.

    We can see following range of variations in different life forms:

    (a) Variation in size: this variation can be observed at microscopic bacteria to the blue whale and red wood trees of California.

    (b) Variation in lifespan: The insects like fruit flies live for few hours while some trees-like pine live for several years.

    (c) Variations in body colours: Some living things are colourless, such as worms, whereas birds, insects, flowers are colourful.

    Q. What is the primary characteristic on which the first division of organisms is made?

    Sol.

    The primary characteristic on which first division of organisms is based on whether the cells occur singly (unicellular) or they are grouped together and function as individual group (multicellular). Cell is considered to be the fundamental characteristic for classifying all living organisms.

    Q. Which organisms are called primitive and how are they different from the so called advanced organisms?

    Sol.

    The organisms which have the following characteristics are said to be primitive organisms

    • Simple body structure
    • Ancient body design

    Features found in the organism have not changed over a period of time. But the advance organisms are those who have acquired their particular body designs relatively recently and that is why these organisms are known as advanced organisms or higher organisms.

    Q. In the hierarchy of classification, which grouping will have the smallest number of organisms with a maximum of characteristics m common and which will have the largest number of organisms?

    Sol.

    In the hierarchy of classification, the species is the grouping which will have the smallest number of organisms with a maximum of characteristics in common. The grouping which will have the largest number of organisms with maximum characteristics common is kingdom.

    Q. How are the criteria for deciding divisions in plants different from the criteria for deciding the sub-groups among animals?

    Sol.

    As plant body design differ from animals. The plants have body design based on their need to prepare their own food whereas animals obtain their food from plants and animals. Hence, in animals other body features like presence of skeleton, etc., is used to make sub-groups rather than making broad groups. Thus we get to know that the criteria for deciding divisions in subgroups are totally different from animals.
