From the next academic year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Palakkad is going to introduce new academic courses. The Government of Kerala has sanctioned the demand and has decided to offer 500 acres of land for the new IIT campus that is scheduled to come up at Puthusseri near Kanjikode. Till the new campus comes up the IIT Palakkad would start offering courses from a temporary campus in Palakkad from the very next year.
The IIT Palakkad temporary campus would be based 20 km from Palakkad. It would be in a distance of 25 km from Coimbatore, in the Ahalia Group of Institutions campus near Walayad. The temporary campus of IIT has all the facilities required for the campus to start functioning classes from the next year. It has good accessibility to Wi-Fi, functioning and furnished training labs, cafeteria, gymnasium, a cell for training and placement and well to do hostels for both boys and girls. At the new campus there is also provision for sports and recreational activities. Along with these the students would also get transportation facilities inside the campus, making their life easier inside the campus.
The state government is trying to acquire another 100 acres of land for the campus. The Central government on its first phase would spend almost Rs 2,200 crore on the IIT Palakkad campus. IIT Palakkad Director, P B Sunil Kumar said, “In the next academic session, IIT Palakkad will offer Civil, Mechanical, Computer Science, and Electronic Engineering courses to offer 120 students at its temporary campus.”
