Group discussion is a process where a topic is presented by the host and every participant is asked to share his/her opinions and ideas, and the one who comes up with the most reasonable answer wins it big time. Specifically, Group Discussion is the part of selection process in MBA institutes and other colleges providing professional courses. Now, it’s of utmost importance for you to know about the different types of group discussion and how to plan a productive strategy for each one of these GD process.

Generally, there are two types of Group Discussions that are normally followed by most of the institutes. They are, Topic-Based and Case Study based Group Discussions.

Let’s first discuss about the Topic-Based GD as this is the most popular type followed and practiced by institutes.

Knowledge-Based Topics:

In these kinds of Group discussion, you should have thorough understanding of the topic that is presented to you to debate upon. You must proceed ahead in such GDs with facts & figures, and the information you provide while debating should be substantial enough to convince everyone in the panel. Moreover, be confident while speaking and know what you are saying to support your logic.

Topics such as “Is MBA becoming overrated in India and “Corporate jobs vs Government jobs” are generally given to participants for debating in knowledge-based topics.

Conceptual Topics

Conceptual or abstract topics are becoming common now-a-days as institutes believe in testing the overall knowledge along-with analytical and aptitude skills of students. In such type of group discussions a topic is randomly selected, and are intangible in most of the cases. Such discussions give panellists the space to judge students on the basis of creativity and thinking abilities. Therefore, you should not only have theoretical and bookish knowledge but also posses the ability to handle any situation with your creative bent of mind.

Topics such as “As it appears, as it is” and “Life is a puzzle” are given to students to debate upon. Such topics don’t require facts and figures but demands lots of imagination play-game. So, get ready with your creative instincts to face such a group discussion.

Controversial Topics

Case-based group discussion:

Now, the type of group discussion that is commonly followed top MBA institutes such as IIMs and MICA is Case-Based. In such a group discussion a situation or problem is presented to participating students and are asked to resolve them. Topics such as “discussion between an employee and manager” are presented to judge the decision-making and team handling skills of students.
