Can An Average Student Get Into IIMs

The one question that bugs most of the CAT aspirants is, 'Can an average student get into IIMs?' And the answer to it can differ vastly based on one's definition of 'an average student.' In a majority of cases, an average student is referred to as someone with an average academic background. Surely, there are some IIMs that take into account excellent academic background both at school and college level. But there are other B-schools like IIM Lucknow that have put into place eligibility criteria that do not require their students be nerds. Thus, indicating that IIMs are not always on the lookout for students with consistently rising academic performance graphs in the past. And while CAT most certainly is one of the toughest management entrance exams in the country, it's not an impossible exam to crack. The key to cracking CAT is consistent efforts, practice and determination.

Let's consider another rumor that has become consistent with the CAT exam. Majority of the people are of the view that candidates from an engineering background have an edge over candidates from the commerce or arts background. Unfortunately, that's just a misinterpretation of the fact that the majority of the students appearing for CAT are engineers thus increasing their probability of getting selected into top institutes. This, however, by no means indicates that non-engineering students do not make it to the IIMs. And to mention the fact the over the last few years most of the IIMs have induced a policy where non-engineering students are given additional points while short listing  of candidates profiles. IIMs have been implementing new criteria for short listing of students to ensure that no one category of students gets an added advantage. These new policies have been put in place to ensure that students from diverse background make it to the IIMs.

The Academic Weightage that different IIM campuses give to a candidates academic background is as given below :-

Every year lakhs of students appear for the CAT entrance exam. However, it's only a small percentage of these students who are really serious about the exam. Most of the other candidates just appear for the CAT exam like they do for any other entrance exam. So, if someone is serious about getting into IIMs they should look at that small percentage of students as their competitor. The major difference that can be seen between the students who managed to qualify CAT as the toppers and someone who just barely managed to make it past the mark is their ability to process the given information in a limited time period. Cracking the CAT is no herculean task, any candidate can do it if they were to do it without the time restriction. For someone appearing in the CAT exam, the confidence is the key. To be able to get into IIMs you need to be among the top students who qualify the CAT entrance exam and for that good preparation is the key. So, some of the preparation tips that you must keep in mind while preparing for the CAT are:

    • Identify your strengths and weakness and practice the areas that you are weak in.
    • Make sure that your concepts are clear.
    • Focus more on accuracy and try to avoid making silly mistakes
    • Remember that practice is the key to cracking the exam
