The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds the Civil Services Examination every year in two parts, i.e. Preliminary Test and Main Examination; the Main Examination comprises a written Test and a Personality Test. The Question paper of the IAS Main History Paper I - 1997 is given as below:

PAPER-I-1997

Time Allowed: Three Hours

Maximum Marks: 300

Candidates should attempt Q.1 and 5 which are compulsory and any THREE of the remaining question, selecting at least ONE question from each Section.

All question carry equal marks.

1. Write short essays of not more than 200 word each on any three of the following topics.

(a) Vedic rituals

(b) The architectural and artistic feature of the great stupa at Sanchi

(c) Skandagupta’s war with the Hunas

(d) Nalanda Mahavihara

2. The continuity of the Indus Civilization into later ages was not continuity to the religious and spiritual fields alone.” Analyse the statement.

3. Asses the achievements of the Pallavas in administration and art.

4. How did Indian culture spread in the South-east Asiatic countries during the Gupta Age?
