China has sent the highest number of its students in US in the last year as one third of the total number of students who went to US for studies are from China. India sent over 1 lakh students to US in 2013-14 and remained at the second spot in terms of number of students in US.

About the Open Doors report

The Open Doors report is published annually by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in partnership with the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs states that in the academic year a total of 8, 86,052 international students came to US for studying at various academic courses which is a significant raise of 8.1 percent from the previous year. In the list of foreign students China topped the list with 2, 74,439 students coming to study at US which is a steep rise of 16.5 percent than the previous year for China.

India, though being in the second spot, is quite far from China in terms of number of students who went to US for studies. Nearly 102,673 students in the year 2013-14 went to US, reversing the declining records for past few years and raising the bar by 6.1 percent from last year. Among the total number of students, Indian students accounted a total of 11.6 percent.

According to IIE president Allan Goodman, “International experience is one of the most important components of a 21st century education, and study abroad should be viewed as an essential element of a college degree.”

In the last 15 years the number of US students studying abroad has also doubled. International students exchange creates bridges for cultural and economic gaps between two nations and helps building better relationships among the countries. It can together work in international issues like climate change, spread of pandemic disease and combating violent extremism.
