Common Mistakes to Avoid in JEE Main Session 2 Exam

JEE Main Session 1 was conducted in January 2024, and it is important for candidates to pay attention to the learnings from the previous session and avoid the mistakes in session 2. Below are some of the common mistakes that candidates should avoid while preparing for JEE Main:

  1. Absence of Time Management: Time management always plays a very important role in exams like JEE Main, where each second is important. A common mistake made by applicants is to focus too much on one segment of the test, due to which they are unable to devote time to other segments. It's crucial to plan your time in such a way that you allocate time intelligently for each section in advance and stick to it during the exam. This can be mastered by practising timed mock tests, which can significantly enhance time management skills.
  1. Ignoring Revision: Applicants often do not give importance to a thorough revision amidst the rigorous preparation schedule. Revision helps to strengthen known concepts and identify areas of weakness. Make sure you allot enough time for revision, focusing on key formulas, concepts, and problem-solving techniques.
  1. Ignoring NCERT Material: While preparing for JEE Main, one mistake that candidates make is that they ignore the NCERT textbooks and only study from reference books or other supplementary material. Many questions in JEE Main are directly based on NCERT concepts. Make sure the NCERT curriculum is thoroughly covered in addition to any additional materials.
  1. Skipping Mock Tests: Mock tests help candidates become familiar with the format of the exam, and students can reflect on their preparation level, difficult concepts, and problem areas. Some candidates do not take mock tests seriously and tend to skip them. Taking mock tests on a regular basis helps you identify your strengths and shortcomings so that you can make targeted improvements, in addition to evaluating how prepared you are.
  1. Ignoring Numerical Practice: It is very important to practise numerical based questions while preparing for JEE Main. JEE Main gives emphasis on numerical-based questions across subjects like physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Focusing on only  theoretical concepts without adequate numerical practice can impact performance. Devote enough time to solving numerical problems, which will help you improve accuracy and speed. Practising previous years' question papers and mock tests can provide exposure to a variety of numerical based questions.
  1. Mismanagement of Exam Day Essentials: On the day of the exam, candidates should ensure that all the necessary documents and stationery items like pens, pencils, erasers, and calculators are in place. Inadequate preparation or arriving at the testing location late might lead to stress and, in turn, hamper performance. Plan and organise all exam day essentials well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles.
  1. Panic on Exam Day: Anxiety and panic can impact performance during the exam. It's natural to feel nervous, but stress and anxiety can lead to careless mistakes. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing to manage exam stress effectively. Keep yourself calm and composed throughout the exam to pay attention to each question.
  1. Incorrect Guessing: There is negative marking in JEE Main, so guessing without reasoning can prove costly. Some candidates make blind guesses without any logical reasoning. Prioritise questions based on your strengths and attempt only those where you are very sure of the answer.
  1. Conceptual Ignorance: Memorising formulas and concepts without understanding them can backfire during the exam. JEE Main often tests application-based and conceptual understanding rather than rote memorisation. Make sure you fully understand the fundamental concepts across subjects to attempt diverse question formats effectively and score well.
  1. Ignoring Mock Test Analysis: Analysing mock tests is of utmost importance. Many candidates fail to derive meaningful insights from mock test analysis, overlooking areas of improvement and repeating the same mistakes. Pay attention to question-wise analysis, identifying recurring mistakes, conceptual gaps, and time management issues. Mock test analysis is very important and should not be ignored.

To sum up, in order to succeed in JEE Main Session 2, careful planning and a calculated approach are required. Candidates can increase their chances of achieving success by avoiding common mistakes such as poor time management, neglecting revision, and ignoring mock tests analysis. To crack the JEE Main, one should have a disciplined study plan, regular practice, and maintain a positive mindset.

Wish you all the best for the exam!
