Q. Why are the young trees described as 'sprinting'?
Ans. The poet describes the young trees as sprinting, as the car is moving at a great speed and the trees on the road side are being passed at a fast pace which makes them seem as if they are running along. This also contrasts with the poet's "ashen like" old mother who has weakened with time. Secondly, it also points out to the disparity that the trees are 'sprinting' whereas the mother is dozing.
