Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) conducts National Science Olympiad (NSO) for all students studying from Class 1st to 12th. The Science Olympiad by SOF is conducted in two levels i.e. level 1 for Class 1st to 12th and level 2 for students who appeared in level 1 exam and are studying from Class 3rd to 12th.  Students can participate through their schools (registered with SOF) only. In this article, you can know all about NSO 2018 including exam dates, eligibility, the syllabus, exam pattern for all levels as well as sample papers.

NSO 2018 Eligibility Criteria:

For level 1:

  • All students studying from Class 1st to Class 12th are eligible to participate in National Science Olympiad by SOF.
  • There is no minimum marks eligibility for appearing in NSO 2018

For level 2:

  1. Top 5% students who participated and qualified level 1
  2. Top 25 rank holders class-wise and zone-wise
  3. Toppers from the classes, where at least 10 students participated in the exam and scored 50% marks in the exam
 

SOF NSO 2018 Registration:

  1. The schools interesting in representing their students for providing them with an opportunity to acknowledge their students’ talent can register with Science Olympiad Foundation for participating in the Olympiads.
  2. The SOF registration form 2018 is available on the official website in .pdf format for download and Schools need to fill it and submit at the official address by post.
  3. The participating schools can fill the registration form of SOF 2018 mentioning participating students’ data along with the fee of Rs. 125 per student.
  4. There should be at least 10 students from each participating school as Schools with less than 10 participating students are not eligible

Number of Questions – 35 MCQs for class 1st to 4th and 50 MCQs for Class 5th to Class 12th.

NSO 2018 Syllabus:

The syllabus of NSO for level 1 exam of all classes will be divided as under –

  • Previous class syllabus – 40%
  • Current class syllabus – 60%

For NSO level 2, the question paper for all classes will be based on syllabus of current Class.

Syllabus for Class 12th NSO level 1:

  • Section – 1: Physics: Electricity and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction, Alternating current, Electromagnetic waves, Optics, Modern Physics, Semiconductor Electronics, Communication Systems.
  • Chemistry : Solid State, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry, General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements, p-Block Elements (Group 15 to 18), d- & f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Biomolecules, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life.
  • Section – 2: Higher Order Thinking Questions - Syllabus as per Section – 1.
  • Section – 3 : Relations and Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Matrices and Determinants, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Integrals, Application of Integrals, Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Three Dimensional Geometry, Probability, Linear Programming  OR
  • Section – 3: Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology in Human Welfare, Biotechnology, Ecology.

Syllabus for Class 11th NSO level 1:

  • Section – 1: Physics: Units and Measurements, Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat and Thermodynamics, Oscillations, Waves.
  • Chemistry : Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Structure of Atom, Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, States of Matter, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Hydrogen, The s-Block Elements, The p-Block Elements (Groups 13 and 14), Organic Chemistry - Some Basic Principles and Techniques, Hydrocarbons, Environmental Chemistry.
  • Section – 2: Higher Order Thinking Questions - Syllabus as per Section – 1.
  • Section – 3: Sets, Relations and Functions, Principle of Mathematical Induction, Logarithms, Complex Numbers & Quadratic Equations, Linear Inequations, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Straight Lines, Conic Sections, Permutations and Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Statistics, Mathematical Reasoning, Limits and Derivatives, Probability, Introduction to 3-D Geometry. OR
  • Section – 3: Diversity in the Living World, Structural Organization in Plants and Animals, Cell: Structure and Functions, Plant Physiology, Human Physiology.

  • Section – 1: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Section – 2 : Chemical Reactions and Equations, Acids, Bases and Salts, Metals and Non-metals, Carbon and Its Compounds, Periodic Classification of Elements, Life Processes, Control and Coordination, Reproduction in Organisms, Heredity and Evolution, Light-Reflection and Refraction, Human Eye and Colourful World, Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Electric Current, Sources of Energy, Our Environment and Its Management.
  • Section – 3: Higher Order Thinking Questions - Syllabus as per Section – 2

Syllabus for Class 9th NSO level 1:

  • Section – 1: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Section – 2: Motion, Force and Laws of Motion, Gravitation, Work and Energy, Sound, Matter in Our Surroundings, Is Matter Around Us Pure,  Atoms and Molecules, Structure of Atom, Cell-The Fundamental Unit of Life, Tissues, Diversity in Living Organisms, Why Do We Fall III, Natural Resources, Improvement in Food Resources.
  • Section – 3: Higher Order Thinking Questions - Syllabus as per Section – 2

Syllabus for Class 8th NSO level 1:

  • Section – 1: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Section – 2: Crop Production and Management, Microorganisms, Synthetic Fibres and Plastics,  Metals and Non-metals, Coal and Petroleum, Combustion and Flame, Conservation of Plants and Animals, Cell, Reproduction and Endocrine System, Force and Pressure, Friction, Sound, Chemical Effects of Electric Current, Some Natural Phenomena, Light, Stars and the Solar System, Pollution of Air and Water.
  • Section – 3: Higher Order Thinking Questions - Syllabus as per Section – 2

Syllabus for Class 7th NSO level 1:

  • Section – 1: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Section – 2: Heat, Motion and Time, Electric Current and its Effects, Winds, Storms and Cyclones, Light, Acids, Bases and Salts, Physical and Chemical Changes, Weather, Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate, Fibre to Fabric, Nutrition in Plants and Animals, Respiration in Organisms, Transportation in Plants and Animals, Reproduction in Plants, Natural Resources and Their Conservation (Soil, Water: A Precious Resource, Forests our Lifeline, Wastewater Story).
  • Section – 3: Higher Order Thinking Questions - Syllabus as per Section – 2.

SOF NSO 2018 Selection Criteria:

The students appearing for level 1 of NSO 2018 will be selected for ranking as under –

  1. Top 5% students who participated and qualified level 1
  2. Top 25 rank holders class-wise and zone-wise
  3. Toppers from the classes, where at least 10 students participated in the exam and scored 50% marks in the exam

Class 1st to 3rd students need not appear for second level of NSO 2018. However, students from Class 4th to Class 12th will be ranked as under

  • Marks scored by students in NSO 2018
  • In case there are ties in marks of two or more students, then their ranks will be decided on the basis of marks scored in sections as under –

Students participating in SOF Olympiads will be rewarded at different levels as under –

In case two or more students achieve the same rank, cash award in the applicable category will be distributed as under:

International Winners - 

  • For up to 9 students getting same rank, award amount will be distributed equally. In addition, each winner will be awarded a medal (in the applicable category) and a Certificate.
  • In case 10 & more students get same rank, in lieu of cash award, each winner will be awarded gifts worth Rs.1,000/- each + a medal ( in the applicable category) and a Certificate. 

Zonal Winners -  

  • For up to 4 students getting same rank, award amount will be distributed equally. In addition, each winner will be awarded a medal (in the applicable category) and a Certificate.
  • ​In case 5 & more students get same rank, in lieu of cash award, each winner will be awarded gifts worth Rs.1,000/- each + a medal (in the applicable category) and a Certificate. 

NSO Scholarships at school level

Medals: All class toppers will be awarded Medals for qualifying NSO 2018 as per the below mentioned criteria –

  • Top 3 students will be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medal respectively (where 10 or more students from a class (1st to 10th all sections) appeared for NSO 2018)
  • Topper student will be awarded Gold medal (if only 5 to 9 students from a class including students from all sections appeared for NSO 2018 )
  • Top 3 students will be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medal respectively from each section of a class if more than 25 students appear for NSO 2018 for the class level.

Certificate of Participation: All students will be given certificate of recognition for participating in NSO 2018 for both levels (separately).
