PhD enrollment has seen a constant rise in the last 10 years. As per the UGC data, the number of enrollments has increased thrice from 10497 to 27001.
Citing improvement in higher education in the country, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey has given a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The Minister has mentioned about the UGC data regarding PhD enrollments.
As of 31 March 2005, 10497 PhD enrollments had been done. The number has steadily increased and as on 31 March 2015 there were a total of 27001 enrollments.
The Minister further stated that in the academic year 2014-2015, a total of 27327 candidates had received their PhD degrees.
Reduced number of dropouts from IITs and IIMs was also mentioned by the Minister. Active measures undertaken by the institutes have lead to a tremendous decline in the number of dropouts from various courses.
Six new IITs will be established soon across the country and it will definitely boost the education sector of the country.
