SBI PO Prelims Exam 2015: Tips and Strategies- English Language

The banking team of has come up with tips and strategies for English Language Section that could help candidates to score more in the prelims examination and crack it easily.

Inviting aspiring candidates from all over the nation, State Bank of India has opened 2000 vacancies in the post of Probationary Officers in various branches of the entire nation. The willing candidates can apply their candidature before 3rd May and fill the application form online. This year there would be three tier selections, in which there would be prelims, mains and interview rounds. Those who have given examinations for the post of Bank PO would find it a little different this time as there would be prelims examination to initially check the skills of the candidates. Prelims are expected to be easier than the usual banking written examinations and would contain 100 marks for which the candidates would get an hour to solve. There are three papers in the prelims examination namely, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability and English Language. The candidates need to score individual cut off marks in all the papers as well as score the overall cutoff set by the bank to qualify for the mains examination.

Tips and Strategies

The English Language paper could become a scoring paper in this examination if adequate care and preparation is given to it. The paper contains 30 marks and would be easier to solve as the questions are expected to be easier than the Main examination. The reading comprehensions are expected to be short and easier. Along with them the difficulty level of synonyms, idioms and phrases, cloze tests etc. are expected to be a lot easier than earlier examinations.

  • Follow the Golden Rules: There are certain set rules for any of the papers and it is the same for this paper as well. The key is to keep reading and make yourself aware of the new words, newer styles of sentence formations and continuous practice of the comprehensions to make yourself comfortable with the time. Solving questions from the paper would seem to be very easy if you can undergo a written test of your own. The more you read the more your vocabulary would get stronger and you would be able to answer the questions pertaining to synonyms and antonyms in the paper which are quite common and reappearing.
  • Hone your grammatical skills: Half the paper would get automatically solved if you develop a proper grammatical sense in yourself. This doesn’t come in a day and needs understanding of the language and grip over it. It could be attained through practice and love for the language over time. Once you do that any questions whether they are fill in the blanks, cloze tests or error detection, you would be able to handle them carefully and skillfully. Test of Active and Passive voice, direct and indirect speech, idioms and phrases are quite common in this paper and thus needs your attention for effective solving.
  • Go through Practice Sets and Mock Question Papers: It is helpful to practice through easily available Practice Sets and Mock Question papers in market or over internet. The candidates would get an idea about the question pattern and understand the different categories of questions that can appear in the examination. For example in the Error Detection category of questions alone there could be separate questions of spotting errors, improving sentences, correcting wrongly written passages and choosing correct sentences over incorrect ones. This can be effectively understood if the candidates go by these sets and practice them.

Save Time: The paper in itself is time saving and thus allows the candidates to give prominence to the other two papers in the examination which are quite time-taking. This allows to balance their time and the candidates should understand the craft of it.
