In order to provide education in law and make girls educate about the practical applications of law related to women’s issues, the Lady Shri Ram College for Women has decided to initiate a certificate course. The certificate course will be named as ‘Women and Law’, and will make women aware of the provisions of law pertaining to their own issues of importance. Around 50 students attended the initial interactive session on Tuesday in the college, where the course was initiated.
These sessions are getting organized by internal complaints committee at LSR College in collaboration with Delhi State Legal Services Authority and Women’s Development Cell in the college. Under the course, the candidates will have to undergo six session of two hours each, twice in a week. They will, at the end of the course, have to visit Saket district Court and the Delhi High Court for practical experience.
According to Women’s Development Cell coordinator, Manmeet Kaur, “There’s a lot of misuse of law even at the hands of women. The sessions are going to focus on the correct use of law and loopholes used for exploitation by both men and women. Lectures on feminism and other issues concerning women keep happening, but the practical application of what law there is needs to come up.”
The first day of the certificate course was curated by secretary of DLSA, Chetna Singh, who gave insights about the women status in the past, basic laws related to women and how after the independence the status of women has skewed in the country. According to Dr. Suman Sharma, who is the Principal of LSR College, “We started with educating students about Domestic Violence Act and realized they were interested in knowing more. That’s how the certificate course was conceptualized.”
