5. King George’s Medical University, Lucknow
Established in 1912, the King George’s Medical University, Lucknow is one of the oldest medical colleges in India. The college was started under the banner of King George's Medical College which was renamed to ChhatrapatiShahujiMaharaj Medical University before being given the current name in 2002. The medical college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Medical Council of India (MCI). Academically, the university has four key departments i.e. Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Paramedical Sciences and Nursing. Admissions to undergraduate courses are offered through NEET exam while for postgraduate level courses, admissions are based on the CAT exam conducted by the university. Based in Manipal, Karnataka; the Kasturba Medical College has clinched the 4th spot on the list of top Medical Colleges in India. The College was established in 1953 and holds the distinction of being India’s first self-financed medical college. The college is recognized by the Medical Council of India as well as by several international agencies such as the General Medical Council of Great Britain, the Australian Medical Council and the American Medical Association. 3. Christian Medical College, Vellore
The Christian Medical College was established in 1900 as one of the first medical colleges of the country. The College is a private research institute based in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The CMC is fondly referred as the ‘college of many firsts’ in the medical circles because the first successful open heart surgery (1961), first kidney transplant (1971) and first bone marrow transplant (1986) for conducted at the college. In addition, the college is also known internationally for performing the first reconstructive surgery for leprosy in the world (1948).
