IAS Kumar Anurag's UPSC Success Story

Early Life:

Anurag was a Hindi medium student till standard 8th. He studied in Bihar's Katihar district's small Hindi medium school. Anurag was later admitted to an English medium school by his parents where he found his life a little more strenuous. For a Hindi medium student, an English medium school initially seems very pompous. However, he adjusted well within a short time. He was an average student in his early education days. He worked hard for his class 10th exams and scored 90 per cent marks.

However, Anurag received a setback when he failed in class 12th pre-board exams as he did not pass in Mathematics. He took it as a challenge and studied harder this time to secure 90% in Class 12th Boards.

Graduation & Post Graduation:

After 12th, Kumar Anurag went to Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce and studied Economics. He graduated from SRCC in 2014 and post graduated from Delhi School of Economics in 2016.

UPSC Attempts:

Kumar Anurag prepared for UPSC Civil Services in his post-graduation days and secured AIR 677 in his first attempt at UPSC CSE in 2017. The same year, he also prepared for the Indian Economics Services exam, in which he secured AIR 7.

He decided to drop the IES job as he had always aimed for Civil Services. So he gave himself another chance and secured AIR 48 in UPSC Civil Services Exam 2018.

Anurag's Civil Sevices preparation involved going through regular online blogs, reading papers, following strategies of UPSC toppers etc.

Anurag had chosen Economics as his optional subject which gave him the correct balance of marks required to get a good UPSC Mains score. He very well understood the importance of a high score in CSE Mains and wanted, not to depend much on CSE Personality Test or UPSC Interview.

On being asked why he chose economics as optional Anurag said, "With strategic preparation, it provides you with a very balanced score. The very limited scope of subjectivity in this paper. Hence one can expect scores to be in the range 275-325 with good preparation." This is what is called a smart preparation strategy.

Also, choosing economics gave him an edge over others in covering the GS syllabus and preparing for the interview, as polity and economics are a major chunk of the UPSC CSE Syllabus.

Marks in Optional Subject:

Anurag scored 158 marks in Economics paper 1 and 149 in Economics paper 2 in his 2017 CSE Mains exam. His final scores rose in CSE 2018 as he got 159 marks in Economics paper 1 and 155 in Economics paper 2.

IAS Anurag has been an active social media user. He often shares tips and strategies with the UPSC aspirants of the country. You can find him on Twitter. Kumar Anurag is currently posted as SDM of Nalanda.

UPSC Strategy:

He has also penned down his UPSC strategy in hope of someone else finding it useful.

He says that candidates must choose subjects that provide them with balanced scores in CSE and strongly urge them to make notes. His strategy involved general book readings in the first phase of preparation, followed by pointwise notes of each chapter in phase 2.

His emphasis was on solving many question papers before CSE. You can check his strategy from the link shared here. Check his tweet below.
