Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is an autonomous body entrusted with the responsibility to ensure unbiased recruitment to civil services & posts under the Union and the Central government. The Commission is also responsible for protection of service interests.
The Commission is all set hold a Competitive Examination for recruitment to Category I posts in the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines and to Category II posts in the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Water Resources from 1 December 2012.
Name of the post and Number of Vacancies:
(i) Category I posts in the Geological Survey of India (GSI)
(a) Geologists, Group ‘A’– 300
(b) Assistant Geologist Grade-I Group ‘B’– 67
(ii) Category II posts in the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB)
(a) Jr. Hydrogeologists (Scientist B) Group ‘A’– 03
(b) Assistant Hydrogeologists Group ‘B’– 12
[In the GSI, 17 vacancies of Geologists and 3 posts for Assistant Geologist have been reserved for PH category candidates (Hearing Impairment Category). In CGWB, 1 (One) vacancy of Junior Hydro-geologist have been reserved for PH category candidates (Hearing Impairment -Partially).
(The number of vacancies is tentative.)
Interested candidates can apply online through UPSC’s website: www.upsconline.nic.in . They are not required to submit hard copy of their application to the Commission at this stage.
Last Date For Submission Of On-line Applications: The Online Application -- both Part I and Part-II -- can be filled up to 15 October 2012 till 11.59 PM after which the link will be disabled
Examination Centre: The examination will be held at -- Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Delhi, Dispur, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram.
Age Limit:
1. For Geologist [Group A] and Assistant Geologist Grade I [Group B] with the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines: Candidate who have attained the age of 21 years (those born on or before 1 August 1991) and those who have not attained the age of 32 years (those born on or after 2ndAugust, 1980) on 1 August 2012 are eligible to apply.
2. For Jr. Hydrogeologist (Scientist B) (Group A) with Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources: Candidate who have attained the age of 21 years (those born on or before 1 August 1991) and those who have not attained the age of 35 years (those born on or after 2ndAugust, 1977) on 1 August 2012 are eligible to apply.
3. For Asstt. Hydrogeologist (Group B) in Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources: Candidate who have attained the age of 21 years (those born on or before 1st August, 1991) and those who have not attained the age of 30 years (those born on or after 2ndAugust, 1982) on 1st August, 2012 are eligible to apply.
(Reservations will be made for candidates belonging to SC/ST, OBCs and PWD categories as per Government rules.)
Fee: Candidates (except Female/SC/ST/PH candidates) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200/- (Rupees Two Hundred Only) either by depositing the money in any Branch of State Bank of India by cash, or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India / State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur / State Bank of Hyderabad / State Bank of Mysore / State Bank of Patiala / State Bank of Travancore or through Visa / Master Credit / Debit Card.
• No fee exemption is available to OBC candidates.
• Those applicant who deposited the fee in cash but whose case payments details have not been received from the bank, would be treated as fictitious payment cases and their applications will be rejected in the first instance. A list of all such applicants would be made available on the Commission website within two weeks after the last day of submission of online application. The applicants would be required to submit the proof of their fee payment within 10 days from the date of such communication either by hand or by speed post to the Commission. On receipt of documentary proof, genuine fee payment cases will be considered and their applications will be revived, if they are otherwise eligible.
• Fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances nor can the fee be held in reserve for any other examination or selection. Payment of fee through any other mode is neither valid nor acceptable. Applications submitted without the prescribed fee/mode (unless remission of fee is claimed) shall be summarily rejected.
Educational Qualification:
1.For Geologist [Group A] and Assistant Geologist Grade I [Group B] with the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines: Master’s degree in Geological Science / Geology / Applied Geology / Geo-Exploration / Mineral Exploration / Engineering Geology / Marine Geology / Earth Science and Resource Management / Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies / Petroleum Geosciences / Geochemistry from a University / Institute recognized by the government / UGC or a foreign university approved by the Central Government.
2. For Jr. Hydrogeologist (Scientist B) (Group A) and Asstt. Hydrogeologist (Group B) with Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources:
(a) Master’s degree in Geology / Applied Geology / Marine Geology from a University / Institute recognized by the government / UGC or a foreign university approved by the Central Government.
(b) Master’s degree in Hydrogeology from a recognised University.
