VEL TECH University Distributes Rs. 2.5 Crores Scholarships to 250 Students

The ninth VelTech Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarship function was celebrated at Vel Tech University on 22nd Feb. Prof. Dr. Ing. Thomas Vietor, Director, Institute of Engineering Design, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany presented cheques for Rs. 2.5 crores to 256 students. Col. Prof. Dr. R Rangarajan, President of Vel Tech, instituted a Scholarship Scheme called the Rs 7 Cr. Vel Tech Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarships in 2009 with the laudable objectives of ensuring that the access to higher technical education was not barred by socio-economic or regional considerations and to promote national integration and meritocracy in the university campus. Of all the students who join the university every year , the top student from each state in India is granted 100% scholarship covering both tuition and hostel fees while every admitted student who secures 90% on average in mathematics, physics and chemistry in the HSC is assured of 50% concession in tuition fees. Interestingly, nearly 150 students from Andhra Pradesh who have secured 90% and above have joined the University this year and all of them received the scholarship among the 256.

Dr. R Ranagrajan, President, Vel Tech presided. Dr RP Bajpai, Chancellor and Dr. Beela Satyanarayana Vice Chancellor spoke. Mr. Kumar Jayant, Commissioner, Technical Education graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Mrs. Dr. Sakunthala Rangarajan Vice Chairman, World class scientists Dr.P.K.Mallick (Univ of Michigan Dearbon, USA), Prof.Dr.Chin-Hsaing Cheng (NCKU, Taiwan), Dr.-Ing.Eckhardt Schneider (Fraunhofer IZFP, Germany),
Dr.-Ing.Michael  (IVW, Germany), Prof.Dr.-Ing.Christoph Herrmann (TUB, Germany) were also present on the occassion. 

Earlier, 728 students across India have benefited by this scheme with Rs 5.5 crore Scholarships were distributed by Eminent Personalities like Smt.D.Purandeswari, Hon’ble Minister of State for HRD, GOI, His Excellency, the Governor of Tamil Nadu Dr.Rosaiah, Mr.Narayana Murthy, Chairman, Infosys & Dr.Mrs.Sudha Murty, Infosys Foundation.
