The 23rd European Film Awards was organised on 4 December 2010 in Tallinn, Estonia. Polish director Roman Polnaski’s film, Ghost Writer emerged the biggest winner of the 23rd European Film Awards. Ghost Writer won a total of six awards including awards in the category of best European film, best director and best script. Polanski's film, Ghost Writer is an adaptation of Robert Harris' novel of a British journalist who becomes involved in intrigue after he ghostwrites the memoirs of a former prime minister. Polanski was named the best European director. Polanski along with Harris who co-wrote the script of Ghost Writer was given the best screenplay prize. Ewan McGregor took the lead actor award for his performance in Ghost Writer while Albrecht Konrad picked up the production designer award for his work on the film. Alexandre Desplat nabbed the composer award for composing the track of Ghost Writer.
Israeli film Lebanon won two awards- the European Discovery Award and the Carlo di Palma Cinematographer award given to Giora Bejach. The film also won the Fipresci prize. Lebanon was first screened at the 2009 Venice Film Festival and it went on to become the first Israeli feature to win the prestigious Golden Lion Award. The film also won best script award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival 2010.
Luc Barnier and Marion Monnier were awarded in the editing category for their work in the terrorist biopic Carlos.
The documentary prize that is given by Franco-German TV channel ARTE went to Nostalgia for the Light.
The people's choice award for European film 2010 was given to Mr. Nobody, written and directed by Jaco van Dormael and produced by Philippe Godeau.
23rd European Film Awards were given out after the Tallinn Black Night's Film Fest concluded on 3 December 2010. Sergei Loznitsa's dark tale of contemporary Russian provincial life My Joy (Germany/Ukraine/Netherlands) took top prize for Eurasian film at the Tallinn Black Night's Film Fest.
