A Supreme Court bench comprising Justice SH Kapadia and Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice Swatanter Kumar on 19 July 2010 accepted the resignation of former Chief Justice of India AM Ahmadi as Chairman of Bhopal Memorial Hospital Trust (BMHT). In a letter to the then Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan dated 20 June 2009, Justice Ahmadi had expresed his desire to be released from the position of the chairman of BMHT. The Court allowed the centre to take over the management of BMHT and also gave directions to the Central government to dissolve the trust.

Justice Ahmadi was part of the SC Bench which took decisions on the Bhopal gas tragedy case that included the dilution of harsher penal charges in 1996. Bhopal Gas Tragedy is the world's worst industrial catastrophe that occurred in the midnight of 2-3 December 1984 owing to the leak of methyl isocyanate (MIC) in the MIC plant of the company Union Carbide. Following the Supreme Court's decision after the tragedy, a trust was set up in 1992 by Union Carbide in London with Ian Percival as the sole trustee. After the death of Percival, the BMHT was formed and Justice Ahmadi was appointed as the chairman on 15 May 1998.
