Assam launches toll-free helpline for women

The state government of Assam has launched a women's toll-free helpline called 181-Sakhi to tackle the recent surge in crime in the state. The service is presently being launched for one shift and will be open from 9 am to 5 pm.

The state government of Assam on March 29, 2018 launched a women's helpline to tackle the recent surge in crime in the state.

The toll-free helpline, 181-Sakhi, was launched by the state’s Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal at a programme held in Janata Bhawan. The service is presently being launched for one shift and will be open from 9 am to 5 pm. It will soon be made available for 24 hours.

The service has been integrated with women police stations, state commission for women, family counseling centres, NGOs, legal service centres, shelter homes, medical and legal experts.

Objective

The helpline aims to assist women with emergency response and rescue.

It will also help women with social welfare schemes, shelter, counseling, medical examination, filing FIR, legal aid and recording of audio and visual depositions.

 

Why has it been introduced?

• The service has been inducted to keep a check on the recent surge in crimes against women in the state of Assam.

• It is a part of the series of measures undertaken by the state government to stop such crimes.

• The state’s Chief Minister, while urging women to make the best use of the helpline, also directed all the concerned government bodies to ensure immediate response to the calls of women in distress.

• Besides this, the Superintendents of Police of all the districts have been asked to ensure swift and correct filing of charge-sheet in all crimes against women so that justice can be given to the victims.
