BJP Organised 'Run for Unity' Across the Country

Dec 16, 2013 11:56 IST

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) organised runs in Kolkata, Patna, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Jammu and Jharkhand on 15 December 2013. The race was organized as part of its nationwide programme to drum up support for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's Statue of Unity project on the 63rd death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Gujarat government is building a gigantic statue of Sardar Patel, christened Statue of Unity, which it claimed would be the world's tallest statue on Sadhu Bet in Narmada River.

A campaign was also organised along with the run for collection of iron from all over the country for the statue. 565 places were chosen by BJP for the race as Patel had integrated this number of princely states into the Union of India at the time of Independence.

The theme for the race was good governance and national integration.
