Commemorative postage stamps on 2014 FIFA World Cup released by PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released commemorative postage stamps on the 2014 FIFA World Cup that is being played in Brazil.

Narendra ModiPrime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 June 2014 released commemorative postage stamps on the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The FIFA World Cup is being played in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014 with the slogan All In One Rhytm.

The Prime Minister also urged the Department of Posts to develop a website on the history of Indian football in lieu of India hosting the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017. During the occasion he underscored the need to inculcate the love of sports among children of the country.

He also urged that the art of commentary especially should also be developed in other sports as it has happened in cricket.

India in FIFA World Cup
India by default qualified for the 1950 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil due to withdrawal of all of their scheduled opponents. But they were not able to participate due to FIFA ruling after 1948 London Olympics Games that didn’t allow barefoot participation in the World Cup. However, there were also domestic reasons. India is ranked at 154th position in World Ranking.
