A three-member committee that was set up by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to look into the validity of recommendations made by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for renewing the licence of Gian Sagar Medical College in Patiala submitted its report on 3 May 2010. According to the committee report there were no major grounds on which the college could have been denied recognition. Also it mentioned that the college had the required infrastructure. The need for examination came up after MCI Chief Dr Ketan Desai was arrested for allegedly striking a Rs 2 crore deal to allow new courses in the private medical college.
