Michael Clarke was appointed Australia's Test and one-day captain on 30 March 2011. The appointment was made day after Ricky Ponting quit after Australia's World Cup exit. Shane Watson will be Clarke's vice-captain and Cameron White will remain the Twenty20 skipper.
Clarke made his professional debut for New South Wales as an 18-year-old in the 1999-2000 Australian domestic season. He moved to the national one-day team in January 2003 against England at Adelaide and was chosen to make his Test debut against India at Bangalore in October 2004. Clarke has till date played 69 Tests and scored 4742 runs, including 14 centuries. In test cricket he has an average of 46.49. In the one-day game, he has scored 5928 runs at an average of 43.58, with 52 wickets to his name.
