Government approves special package for footwear and leather sector

• The Union Government has approved a special package for employment generation in the leather and footwear sector.
• The government has approved four projects worth over Rs 105 crore to promote the leather industry in Tamil Nadu.
• The projects, under the Central Sector Scheme - Indian Footwear, Leather and Accessories Development Programme (IFLADP), aim to facilitate upgradation of infrastructure, job creation and environmental sustainability. The project has earmarked Rs 2600 crore for the period 2017-20 in this connection.
• Besides, in-principal approval has also been given to mega leather cluster at Bantala in West Bengal. This will generate employment for around 7000 people and lead to an investment of up to Rs 500 crore.

Record number of nearly 50,000 nominations received for Padma Awards 2019

• A record number of nearly 50 thousand nominations have been received for the Padma Awards-2019.
• Home Ministry said that the nomination received this year is 32 times higher compared to 2010.
• The nomination process for the awards was simplified and made online in 2016 to encourage citizens to participate in large numbers.
• The online nomination process for the Padma Awards -2019 commenced on May 1, 2018 and the last date for submission of nominations was September 15. The awards will be announced on the occasion of Republic Day in 2019.

Sri Lankan Parliament passes law to compensate victims of separatist war between Srilankan Army and LTTE

• The Sri Lankan parliament has passed a law to pay compensation to the victims of the 30-year-long separatist war between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE, which claimed at least 100,000 lives.
• The Reparations Bill was passed on October 10, 2018 with a 59-43 vote and it will benefit survivors and victims of the kin in several armed uprisings in the country.
• Sri Lanka has had a long history of conflict not only in the north but also in the south. So, many people have disappeared without a trace.
• Hence, the decision was taken as it is necessary to find out what happened to them and give reparations to the affected people.
• The long-delayed legislation had been a key demand of the international observers urging reconciliation in the ethnically divided nation.

Govt hikes import duty on certain communication items up to 20 per cent

• The government has hiked the import duty on certain communication items, including base stations, to up to 20 per cent as part of efforts to check a widening current account deficit by curbing imports.
• According to the notification issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs, the increased duties will be effective from October 12, 2018.
• The import duty has also been hiked on certain inputs used in the communication industry like printer circuit board assembly.
• The duty has also been raised to 20 per cent from 10 per cent for base stations and for machines for the reception, conversion and transmission or regeneration of voice, images or other data, including switching and routing apparatus other than modems, voice frequency telegraphy, digital loop carrier systems and multiplexers.  
• This is the second round of import duty hike announced by the government. Previously in September, the government had doubled the import duty on 19 items, including air conditioners, household refrigerators and washing machines to 20 per cent.

World Egg Day observed

• The World Egg Day was observed across the world on October 12, 2018. The day’s 2018 theme is “Protein for Life”.
• The day was established at the International Egg Commission, Vienna 1996 conference when it was decided to celebrate World Egg Day on the second Friday in October each year.
• The day aims to help raise awareness of the benefits of eggs and their importance in human nutrition.
• The proteins contained within eggs are considered highly important in the development of the brain and muscles, have a key role to play in disease prevention and contribute to general well being.

No scope for any defect in electoral rolls: CEC

• Chief Election Commissioner, OP Rawat has said that the commission does not leave a scope for any bogus voters in electoral lists.
• Rawat said that the work of deleting the bogus voters' names is completed much before the elections are announced in a state.
• The CEC's comments come after the Supreme court dismissed petitions of Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Sachin Pilot seeking directions to the commission to provide the draft voter list in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
• The apex court had reserved its verdict on October 8 on the plea of leaders alleging duplication of voters in the list and sought a proper redressal of grievances to ensure free and fair elections.
• Polling for assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh will be held on November 28 and in Rajasthan on December 7.

Meghalaya to launch Blue Revolution: Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries

• The state government of Meghalaya is planning to launch Blue Revolution: Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries.
• The Central Government has sanctioned Rs 51 crore for the scheme and it will be launched on October 26.
• With the launch of the scheme, the state would be self-sufficient in fish production.
