Australian Scientist David Warren, who invented the flight data recorder, popularly called ‘black box’, died on 19 July 2010. The black-box invented in 1953 helped solve airplane crashes and improved airline safety around the world. Black boxes in the present day are painted bright orange or red. It is used to withstand fire, heavy impact and intense water pressure. Also the invention enabled investigators to examine crashes. The technology is currently also applied to boats, trucks and automobiles.
