A two-day long Kite festival was organised by the Delhi Tourism in association with Shahjehanabad Redevelopment Corporation and Delhi Government's Department of Art and Culture at the India Gate lawns. The festival was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on 12 November 2011. The festival aimed at providing entertainment to the masses along with educating them about the rich history of flying kites.
Kite flying has over the centuries emerged as one of the most popular sports in India. It also found a pride of place in various other civilisations – such as the Chinese and the Greek. The kite flying festival at India Gate witnessed participation of expert kite makers from all over India. participants from Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Gujarat and Rajasthan joined the festival. kite cutting competition for professionals were organised on the occassion. A large number of designer kites werealso be on display. A trail of over 100 kites on one string was one of the attractions.
Other cultural programmes Dastan-e-Patang by Mirza Asif and Mausiki-e-Patang by Soul Sambad were organised. Magic shows, a mini Dilli Haat and a food court serving foods of Delhi were the other attractions of the festival.
