Earth quake of 6.8 magnitude struck Myanmar’s borders with Thailand and Laos, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) from the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai on 24 March 2011. The earthquake was centred 111 km (69 miles) north of Chiang Rai which is Thailand's northernmost province and a sparsely populated hilly area.
Two strong earthquakes struck north eastern Myanmar less than a minute. However no tsunami was generated as a result of the quake. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first quake was of 7.0-magnitude and was just six miles (10 kilometers) deep. The initial quake shook the famous Golden Triangle region where Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet. The first quake was followed by another quake which was far deeper- 140 miles (230 kilometers).
The quake shook buildings even in Bangkok, 500 miles (800 kilometers) south of the epicenter. An aftershock of an estimated magnitude of 5.5 rattled Thailand on 25 March 2011. Thailand’s northern city suffered little damage as well.
According to the Myanmar state television 225 homes and nine government buildings were destroyed by the tremor caused. Over 100 people were reported injured and 74 were reported.
