Eminent botanist and educationist Prof. V.S. Sundaralingam passed away on 27 March 2011. Prof. V.S. Sundaralingam was the former director of the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) in Botany, Madras University.
Prof. Sundaralingam studied under the eminent algologist M.O.P. Iyengar at Madras University and after completing his M.Sc., joined Pachaiyappa's college as assistant professor of Botany in 1945. While at Pachaiyappa's college, he served in various capacities like- NCC commanding officer, men's hostel warden, and vice-principal of the college.
He had retired as director of the CAS in Botany, a post he held after his retirement from Pachaiyappa's college. Prof. Sundaralingam's research on charophytes fetched him the Governor's medal in 1961.
