The first Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in Maharashtra was installed on 28 February 2011 in the Nagpur district of the state for accurate predictions of cyclones, monsoons and weather related phenomena. Doppler Weather Radar has the capability of weather surveillance up to 500 km. It will cover entire Vidarbha region, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
The DWR provides continuous automatic observation of cloud mass and rain patches with update in every 10 minutes. It will make things a lot easier for the farmers who will receive latest weather-information on their mobiles.
The Doppler Weather Radar in Maharashtra is the third one in India. Maharashtra’s second DWR manufactured indigenously by the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is to be installed in Colaba observatory in Mumbai. It will cover the remaining distance between Nagpur and Mumbai.
