The Indian Government in April 2011 handed over a number of terror-related cases that were linked the radicals to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The government decided to hand over three more cases — German Bakery blast (Pune), Jama Masjid shoot-out (Delhi) and Shitla Ghat blast (Varanasi) to the central anti-terror probe agency because little progress has been made so far in the ongoing investigation done by the respective state police.
Seventeen people, including foreigners, were killed in the powerful blast in Pune’s German Bakery on 13 February 2010.
In the Shitla Ghat blast shoot-out case, one child was killed and 37 persons were injured in a blast that took place between the Dashashwamedh and Shitla Ghats during Ganga aarti on r 7 December 2010. The Indian Mujahideen had claimed responsibility for the terror strike, which was carried out a day after the 18th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.
In the Jama Masjid shoot-out case, two men on a motorbike fired several rounds on a tourist vehicle near Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid injuring two Taiwanese nationals on 19 September 2010, days ahead of the Commonwealth Games held here. The Indian Mujahideen again had claimed responsibility for the strike.
