The Goa Legislative Assembly on 18 March 2013 decided to have year-long celebrations for marking 50 years of its inception. The Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Rajendra Arlekar made an announcement of the celebrations.
First Legislative Assembly of Goa was convened on 9 January 1964, three years after liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule. In 1961, the Portuguese rule in Goa ended, after which it was placed under the military administration that was headed by Lt Gen Candeth.
However, on 8 June 1962, civilian government replaced the military rule. Goa became the Indian state from a Union Territory in 1987. The number of seats in Goa Assembly was increased to 40.
