HRD Ministry constitutes task force to look into suicides of JNV students

The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has constituted a task force to look into the issues of suicides of the students in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. The task force will suggest ways and means to arrest the trend of suicides by students.

The Union Human Resource Development Ministry on December 31, 2018 constituted a task force to look into the issues of suicides of the students in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

The task force has been constituted under the Chairmanship of Psychiatrist, Dr Jitendra Nagpal.

Key Highlights

The task force will look into the circumstances leading to the suicidal deaths of students residing in the hostels of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas residential schools.

It will also suggest ways and means to arrest the trend of suicides by students.

Besides, the HRD Ministry has sent a proposal to the Department of Expenditure to engage two full-time counsellors, one male and one female in each of the 630 functional Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

About Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas

The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential schools managed and run by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Background

Recently, a news report had appeared in a leading newspaper regarding suicides by the students of JNVs over the last few years.

According to the report, around 49 students of the residential Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas committed suicide between 2013 and 2017.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also recently issued a notice to the HRD Ministry over the reported suicide of 49 students in five years.
