According to the IATA (International Air Transport Association) announcement on 23 February 2011, the year 2010 was the safest one in terms of global commercial aviation. IATA put the estimate of the global aviation accident rate at 0.61 in 2010, which was the lowest in aviation history even less than the rate of 0.65 in 2006.
IATA estimated further that the ASIA-Pacific rate was higher than the global average at 0.80 in 2010. Accident rate was 0.10 in North America while 0.45 in Europe and 0.34 in North Asia lower than the global average. Africa had an accident rate of 7.41 which was better than the 2009 rate of 9.94.
The global aviation accident rate was measured in hull losses per million flights of Western-built jet aircraft. A hull loss is an accident in which the aircraft is destroyed or substantially damaged and is not subsequently repaired.
IATA is Geneva-based Agency, which represents 95 percent of network airlines around the world.
