India gets elected as member to UNESCO World Heritage Committee

India has been elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee with 142 votes at the re-elections that were conducted for the 2021-25 term.

India is elected as a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the period of 4 years, starting from 2021. The decision came a week after India was re-elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation). The country got elected to the UN World Heritage Committee with 142 votes.

The External Affairs Minister of India S. Jaishankar claimed the latest achievement as a good day for Indian diplomacy. He also added that CBI Special Director Praveen Sinha has been elected to the executive committee of Interpol.

As per the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the re-elections were conducted by the UN body, which India successfully won on November 17, 2021, for the 2021-25 term.

Last week, India had also won the re-election conducted for the 2021-25 term to the Executive Board of the UN Cultural Organisation. The country won the re-elections by 164 votes.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is responsible for the successful implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

The committee works in defining the use of the World Heritage Fund. It also allocates financial assistance upon the requests from the State parties.

India has once again been elected as a member of the prestigious 21-member UNESCO world Heritage Committee from the Asia Pacific Region. This is also India’s 4th term at the World Heritage Committee.
