Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated three new AI Centers of Excellence (CoE) in Delhi, focusing on health, agriculture, and sustainable cities. He highlighted that these centers will play a key role in global public welfare and strengthen India’s position in the international AI space.
Pradhan also mentioned that the CoEs will contribute to shaping global public policy and offer solutions to worldwide challenges. Additionally, these centers are expected to boost India’s startup ecosystem, generating numerous job opportunities.
Emphasis on Interdisciplinary Research
The Minister also emphasized on the need for interdisciplinary research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, encouraging collaboration across different fields. He highlighted how competition-based challenges in educational institutions have proven to be effective in solving everyday problems. It has further driven immense progress in the field.
Shri Pradhan further highlighted the importance of nurturing the country’s talent to ensure they contribute to national development over the next 10 to 20 years. He said that these AI centers will support various initiatives, help establish new companies, and create new growth opportunities.
Who will Operate the Centers: Location
These AI centers will be operated by top academic institutions, which will work together with leading industries and startups on interdisciplinary research. The centers aim to provide practical solutions in newly identified areas and help strengthen the AI ecosystem.
IIT Ropar will lead agricultural activities, IIT Kanpur will lead the sustainable cities project, while AIIMS and IIT Delhi will lead the healthcare CoE.
Make AI in India
The creation of these centers was a part of the 2023-24 budget announcement. The centers are part of India’s "Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India" initiative. These centers will boost India's AI capabilities and play a crucial role in achieving the goal of a "Developed India."
Enhancing India's artificial intelligence capabilities, the program aims to realize the vision of "Viksit Bharat”. A total budget of Rs 990 crore has been allocated for these AI centers, covering the period from the financial year 2023-24 to 2027-28.
