Aug 31, 2015 11:06 IST

Indian women hockey team qualified for Olympics after 36 years. India’s latest participation in Olympics was in 1980 that was held in Moscow, Russia.

The decision in this regard was announced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on 29 August 2015.

The present qualification will allow India to participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics scheduled to be held in August 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This is also the first time when the Indian women team made it to the Olympics through the qualification system.

In 1980 Olympics, the Indian side finished fourth after losing to the Soviet Union in the bronze medal match. Further, it was also the first participation for women hockey team in the mega event.

Now, Indian hockey team is headed by Ritu Rani.
