26 June: International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed on 26 June 2014. The theme of the 2014 is A message of hope: Drug use disorders are preventable and treatable.
This day serves as a reminder of the goals agreed to by Member States of creating an international society free of drug abuse.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on this day launched campaigns to raise awareness about the global drug problem.
Background
United Nations on 7 December 1987, by resolution 42/112 of the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
