Maharashtra government was directed by the Bombay High Court on 24 April 2013 to release water into the Jayakwadi dam

Maharashtra government was directed by the Bombay High Court on 24 April 2013 to release water into the Jayakwadi dam from the reservoirs upstream. The dam is built to address the irrigation and drinking water woes of Marathwada. The court gave the direction on a writ petition filed by the Marathwada Janata Vikas Parishad in 2012.

In the petition, the citizens of Jalna and Aurangabad districts had demanded the immediate release of 27. 5 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) into the Jayakwadi dam to fulfill the agriculture, drinking and industrial needs of Jalna and Aurangabad townships and more than 400 villages in the districts.

However, the quantum of water and the number of days the water will take to reach the Jayakwadi dam remain unclear.
