The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary also known as Manas National Park on 20 February 2012 got four rhinos from Kaziranga, which has the largest number of one-horned rhinos in the world.
Four rhinos which comprised three females and a male were released in Manas around 7 a.m on 20 February 2012. The translocation of rhinos has been done under the programme Indian Rhino Vision 2020.
The Indian Rhino Vision 2020 is a programme being implemented by the Assam Forest Department with the support of the World Wildlife Fund and the International Rhino Foundation. The programme aims at increasing the number of rhinos in Assam to 3000 till 2020.
In 2006, Assam accounted for 2,034 rhinos with 1,885 in Kaziranga, 81 in Pabitora and 68 in the Orange National Park.
