In Libya, rebels have closed in on Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte from both east and west. The rebel commander in Misrata, Mohammed al-Fortiya said that that rebel forces moved within 30 kilometres of Sirte from the west and captured Bin Jawad, 100 kilometres to the east.
Rebel fighters have captured Muammar Gaddafi's heavily fortified Bab al-Aziziya compound and headquarters in Tripoli on 23 August 2011 after a day of fierce fighting, an Agence France-Presse correspondent witnessed.
Libya is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya faces Egypt to the east, Sudan to the south east, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west.
