Mountaineer Priyanka Mohite on April 16, 2021, became the first woman from India to scale the tenth highest mountain in the world, Mt Annapurna.
She also holds the record of being the first Indian woman to scale Mt Makalu, the fifth highest mountain range in the world at 8,485 meters. The 26 years old mountaineer from Maharashtra had achieved this feat in May 2019.
The founder and chairperson of Biocon on Twitter, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw celebrated Priyanka’s achievement on Twitter. She wrote that ‘Our Colleague Priyanka Mohite scaled the peak of Mt. Annapurna (8091 meters) 10th highest mountain in the world - first Indian woman to do so’.

Priyanka Mohite is an employee of Syngene International. It is a publicly listed subsidiary of Biocon. She responded to the tweet and thanked Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw for her wishes and support.

Reportedly, as many as 68 women scaled Mt Annapurna on April 16, 2021. This is also the highest number of climbers to reach the top of the mountain in a single day.

• In 2013, Priyanka climbed the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8,849 meters)
• In 2018, Mt. Lhotse (8,516 meters)
• In 2019, Mt. Makalu (8,485 meters)
• In 2016, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters)
• In 2015, Mt. Menthosa (6,443 meters). It is the second-highest peak in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district.

Mount Annapurna is a massif in the Himalayas. It is in Nepal that includes one peak over 8,000 meters and is also considered to be one of the toughest mountains to climb.
Who is Priyanka Mohite?
Priyanka Mohite was passionate about mountaineering from an early age. She started to climb mountains in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra. In 2012, she scaled Bandarpunch, a mountain of the Gharwal division of Himalayas, in Uttarakhand.
The climber from Bengaluru is also a recipient of the Shiv Chhatrapati State Award of the Maharashtra Government for adventure sports for 2017-2018.
Priyanka works with Syngene International Ltd, Biocon’s research organization. It offers pharma and biotechnology majors customized solutions in molecular biology and synthetic chemistry for early-stage drug discovery and development.
