NCRB released Figures of Total Convicts Lodged in Indian Jails

The National Crime Records Bureau in the month of November 2012 released figures of the convicts lodged in different jails of India by the end of year 2011. The data released states that in the year 2011, a total of 477 death convicts were lodged in different jails of the nation which included 465 men and 12 women. The released data also threw a light on the fact that in 2011 no executions were carried on in the country.

The released figures indicated Uttar Pradesh at the top position in the list with a total of 174 such prisoners followed by Karnataka at second position with 61 prisoners and Maharashtra with 50 such prisoners was at third position.

Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Uttarakhand were the six states where there existed no condemned prisoners in 2011. Out of the Union Territories of India Delhi had 26 condemned prisoners and rest of these territories also have no data of condemned prisoners.

Prisoners with Life Term

By the end of 2011 on 31 December, a total of 68935 prisoners across Indian jails, were sentenced with life term and out of these the number of men and women respectively were 66199 men and 2736 women.

Uttar Pradesh stood first on the ranking chart with 14014 convicts of life term which included 13598 men and 416 women. Maharashtra once again stood at second position with 10503 convicts that included 10209 men and 294 women. 1343 prisoners among whom 61 were women was reported in Delhi.

Lakshadweep reported to have no life sentenced or death convict prisoners topped the list of overcrowding the jails to a figure crossing 500 percent of its total capacity. The four sub-jails of Lakshadweep had a total capacity of lodging 16 prisoners, whereas a total of 80 prisoners were lodged in the four jails.

In total there are 1382 jails in the country with a total capacity to lodge and accommodate 333782 prisoners but on 31 December 2011, 372296 prisoners were in various jails of India. This number stood at 112.1 percent of the total occupancy rate and included 356902 men and 16,024 women.

Population Inmate Prisoners

A total of 2020 convicts reported on the last day of 2011 as inmate convicts, 162 were women with 3601 as under-trial victims and 371 women of foreign origin. In the list of Inmate prisoners too, Uttar Pradesh topped the list and had the highest number of inmate population of 82383 inmates in all the 64 jails of the state. This population of inmate convicts in Uttar Pradesh included 79244 men and 3139 women. Madhya Pradesh in this list of inmate convicts stood up to the second position with a total population of 32916 inmates in all the 123 jails of the state. Bihar was ranked third in the released report of inmate convict population in the jails of the state with a total of 28032 population followed by Maharashtra a house of highest number of jails (215) in the nation, it had 24082 inmate prisoners in the state on the last day of 2011.

A total of 1332 inmates died in the year 2011 of which 43 were women, out of all these deaths, 1244 were natural deaths. Tamil Nadu topped the list of unnatural deaths with 15 unnatural deaths which were a cause of suicide (13), killed by the inmate (1) other causes (1), as reported in the state, in 2011.

Children lodged in Indian Jails

In various jails of the nation a total number of 1729 children, were lodged with their mothers, out of these mother of 440 children were serving prison terms as convict of some or the other case  and there number was 383. 1280 children mothers were reported to under trials and their number was 1177.  

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) also released a data of 154 prisoners who escaped from various jails of the nation. It also cleared that the occupancy rate in various jails of the nation was determined at the end of the year.
