The Union sports ministry in March 2010 brought all national sports federations (NSFs) dependent on it for monetary grants under the right to information (RTI) Act. All NSFs who receive funding of above Rs 10 lakh would come under the Act's ambit and have been asked to appoint public information officers and appellate authorities. The Indian government issued this order after studying various issues including the fact that the NSFs are doing a 'state' function of preparing national teams for their representation at the international level as well as promoting sports in the country.
