As per the poverty estimates released by the Planning Commission for year 2009-10, the number of people living below poverty line in North-Eastern State Sikkim, has come down. The figure has come down with 80000 people now living below poverty line.
While in 2004-05, poverty level in Sikkim stood at 30.9 per cent with 170000 people living under BPL, in the wake of the intense poverty alleviation programme initiated by the government, it was significantly reduced in both urban and rural areas.
As per the data released by the Planning Commission the poverty levels in some other North-Eastern States viz. Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland increased during the period.
