The Narendra Modi-led NDA government has announced the new division of Ministry portfolios among its council of ministers in Modi 2.0. While the government has retained some of the previous term's Union Ministers such as Nirmala Sitharam, Smriti Irani, Rajnath Singh, Piyush Goyal, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Harsh Vardhan taking oath for the second time, there are many first-timers in Modi’s new council, most prominent ones being Amit Shah, S Jaishankar, Anurag Thakur, Ramesh Pokhriyal and Arjun Munda. While Amit Shah had won the Lok Sabha polls with a huge margin from Gandhinagar, S Jaishankar had not contested the elections and is expected to be elected to the Parliament through Rajya Sabha.
Notably, Veteran BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who did not contest Lok Sabha elections on health grounds, is sitting out of the new BJP government for the first time. Besides Swaraj, BJP leaders including eight-time MP Maneka Gandhi, six-time MP Radhamohan Singh, Suresh Prabhu, Mahesh Sharma, Jayant Sinha, Jual Oram, Ram Kripal Yadav, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Anupriya Patel of BJP ally Apna Dal failed to make the cut despite winning their respective seats. Anantkumar Hegde, a Hindutva leader from Karnataka who is known for his controversial statements, was also dropped.
JP Nadda, a Rajya Sabha member was also dropped from the Union Council of Ministers. As per reports, Nadda, who was made BJP's UP incharge, may succeed Amit Shah as party president. Arun Jaitley, who previously held the Finance portfolio, wrote a letter to PM Modi earlier opting out of Modi 2.0, citing health reasons
Narendra Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister for the second time on May 30, 2019, in front of a large audience comprising both Indian and foreign dignitaries. Along with the Prime Minister, 24 Cabinet ministers, 9 ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 24 ministers of State were sworn the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind.
