New Directives for Rajasthan Police: Urdu Words to Be Replaced with Hindi Alternatives

Terms like Mukadma (case), Mulzim (accused), Ilzam (allegation), and Chashmdeed (eyewitness) may soon be replaced with Hindi alternatives in Rajasthan's police vocabulary. The BJP-led state government issued the order, which has drawn criticism from the Congress, calling it unnecessary.

Urdu terms might soon be removed from the state's policing vocabulary.

Mukadma (case), Mulzim (accused), Ilzam (allegation), Ittila (information), Chashmdeed (eyewitness), and many more terms may not be used in Rajasthani policing language for long. Rajasthan's BJP government has ordered that these terms be replaced with suitable Hindi ones.

The state police headquarters began the task after Minister of State (Home) Jawahar Singh Bedham requested a list of such words and their Hindi alternatives in a letter.

Rajasthan State Police to Replace Urdu Terms

In response to the correspondence, state police chief U R Sahoo wrote to the Additional Director General of Police (Training) last month to gather information about Urdu words and determine the proper synonyms for them.

In the letter, he further directed the officer to tell all trainees about the new Hindi phrases, remove Urdu keywords from training materials, and spread the wording in the continuing training programs.

Directives Issued by Police Chief

The correspondence from MoS Bedham is also cited in the DGP's November 11 communication. In the meantime, on December 10, ADG (Crime) sent a letter to all police range inspector generals referring to the DGP's letter. Following that, correspondence was sent to every SP in the state.

According to a Police officer, the SPs have been requested to gather data regarding Urdu words and their Hindi equivalents as per the directives from the Police Headquarters (PHQ).

Criticism from the Congress Party

The Congress party criticised the administration for the action, saying it was unnecessary.

"The state government appears unconcerned about the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The government should take effective action to control crime and restore law and order, instead of replacing words that have been in use for a long time," the congress party said.

Commonly Used Urdu Terms in Policing

Police frequently use several Urdu words, including:

  • Mustagis (complainant)
  • Ilzam (allegation)
  • Ittila (information)
  • Chashmadeed (eyewitness)
  • Jeb Tarashi (pickpocketing)
  • Ferd Baramadgi (recovery memo)
  • Mukadma (case)

These and many other Urdu terms might soon be removed from the state's policing vocabulary.
