The Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health was adopted during the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health which took place from 19 to 21 October 2011. The conference was attended by 125 Member States.
The declaration was meant for a global political commitment for the implementation of social determinants of health approach to reduce health inequities and to achieve other global priorities. This conference was held to build momentum within countries for the development of dedicated national action plans and strategies.
The first meeting of Member States was held at WHO headquarters on 7 September 2011. It was convened by the Government of Brazil.
