Pinaki Chandra Ghose appointed as India's first Lokpal

India gets its first Lokpal six years after the passage of Act, former Supreme Court judge, Pinaki Chandra Ghose was on March 19, 2019 appointed as India’s first Lokpal also known as the anti-corruption ombudsman.

Ghose appointment was approved by the President Ram Nath Kovind. Currently, Ghose is serving as a Member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Besides this, the President also appointed four judicial and four non-judicial members of the Lokpal.

IBBI, SEBI sign MoU for better implementation of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code


The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) on March 19, 2019 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for better implementation of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.

The IBBI and the SEBI together seek effective implementation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and its rules and regulations which aim to promote entrepreneurship and debt market.

GST Council approves transition plan for new tax rates for real estate sector

The Goods & Services Tax (GST) Council held its 34th meeting on March 19, 2019 to discuss the details for implementation of the recommendations made by the council in its 33rd meeting for lowering GST rate in Real Estate Sector.

In case of affordable houses, the GST rate has been reduced to 1 percent without ITC from 8 percent. In case of non-affordable houses, the GST rate for under-construction flats and houses has been brought to 5 percent without Input Tax Credit (ITC), down from the present 12 percent.

SpiceJet joins global airlines’ grouping IATA

Indian budget carrier, SpiceJet on March 19, 2019 announced its membership of global airlines’ grouping ‘International Air Transport Association’ (IATA). SpiceJet is the first Indian low-budget carrier to join the IATA, which has over 290 airlines as members including Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara.

IATA is Geneva-based trade association of the world’s airlines formed to support aviation activity as well as help to formulate industrial policy on aviation issues.

West Nile Virus: Union Health Ministry reviews preparedness on West Nile Fever in Kerala

The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on March 19, 2019 reviewed the current situation and state preparedness to deal with West Nile Virus Fever in Mallapuram district of Kerala along with the officials from National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

West Nile virus is majorly transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Approximately 80 percent of virus infected people not show any symptoms. In severe cases, West Nile virus can cause deadly neurological disease in humans.
