48th World Economic Forum annual meet begins in Davos
The 48th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) began on January 23, 2018 in Davos, Switzerland with the theme 'Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World'.
WEF Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab declared the summit open amid the ski-resort receiving record snowfall. Schwab welcomed members from business, politics, academia and media as well as the first timers with a round of applause.
The summit would witness participation from over 3,000 world leaders, business patrons, academicians, philanthropists and politicians from across the world.
Pope Francis sent a special message on the occasion, calling upon all the participants to overcome fragmentation between states and institutions and work together to facilitate more inclusive approaches in an increasingly globalised world.
No ban on 'Padmaavat': Supreme Court rejects all pleas
The Supreme Court on 23 January 2018 paved the way for screening of Bollywood film 'Padmaavat' by rejecting the pleas of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh governments and the Karni Sena which sought a ban on the release of the film.
The bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud ruled that people must understand that the apex court has passed such order and they must abide by it. It also reiterated that the states must ensure that law and order is maintained.
The three-judge bench refused to modify its January 18, 2018 order of lifting ban on the release of the film by states. The court had directed that no state government would issue orders banning release of ‘Padmaavat’ on January 25, 2018.
Anandiben Patel sworn in as Governor of Madhya Pradesh
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel was on January 23, 2018 sworn in as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Hemant Gupta administered the oath of office to Patel at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan in Bhopal.
Anandiben Patel succeeds Ramnaresh Yadav, who had retired from the post in September 2016. Meanwhile, Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli was holding the additional charge as the Madhya Pradesh Governor.
International Dam Safety Conference to begin in Thiruvananthapuram
India is set to host the International Dam Safety Conference - 2018 on January 23-24 at Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala.
The conference would be inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the inaugural function would be presided over by Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Arjun Ram Meghwal.
The event has been organised by the Central Water Commission in association with Kerala Water Resources Department (KWRD), Kerala State Electricity Board, National Institute of Technology Calicut and College of Engineering, Trivandrum.
India, World Bank sign USD 120 million loan agreement to improve Water Supply Services in Uttarakhand
India and World Bank on January 22, 2018 signed USD 120 million loan agreement to improve water supply services in peri-urban areas of Uttarakhand.
The Agreement for the project was signed by Sameer Kumar Khare, Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, under Union Ministry of Finance; Arvind Singh Hyanki, Secretary in Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation of Uttarakhand and Hisham Abdo, Acting Country Director of World Bank, India.
The Uttarakhand Water Supply Program for Peri-Urban Areas will help the state in increasing water supply coverage as well as ensure sustainable water supply service delivery in peri-urban areas.
